Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
