European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
