Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
