Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
